Érase vez y vez (once upon a time there was: "there was once a time and time"; ser to be) un pobre zapatero remendón (a poor cobbler; zapatom shoe; remendar to repair; mend), que no ganaba nada en su oficio (who earned nothing by his craft; ganar to earn; oficiom profession; trade; occupation), y así determinó comprar una red (and therefore decided to buy a net) y meterse a pescador (and become a fisherman; pezm fish; pescar to fish).

Muchos días estuvo pescando (he was fishing for many days; estar /temporarily/ to be; stay), y no sacó más que cangrejos (and didn’t catch anything but crabs/crayfish; sacar to retrieve; remove) y zapatos viejos (and old shoes), que cuando era remendón (which when he was a cobbler) no veía nunca (/he/ had never seen; ver). Al fin pensó (finally /he/ thought):

—Hoy es el último día que pesco (today is the last day that I /will/ fish). Si nada saco (if I catch nothing), me voy y me ahorco (I /will/ go and hang myself; irse to depart; go away; ahorcar).

Érase vez y vez un pobre zapatero remendón, que no ganaba nada en su oficio, y así determinó comprar una red y meterse a pescador.

Muchos días estuvo pescando, y no sacó más que cangrejos y zapatos viejos, que cuando era remendón no veía nunca. Al fin pensó:

—Hoy es el último día que pesco. Si nada saco, me voy y me ahorco.
